Short, But Deadly, Boot Camp Workout For You

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

What’s happenin’!

Just a quickie for you today because I’ve got a killer little boot camp workout video to share with you.

There are days I like to throw in a little 4-Minute “Tabata” style workout into boot camp.  Where I put it depends on the Theme of the day’s workout.

If it’s a highly “Metabolic” workout, I’ll throw it in the beginning because these puppies do a pretty good job at shooting your heart rate and metabolism through the roof and keep it there the remainder of the workout.

Other days I’ll throw it at the end of the workout as a “Finisher.”  For instance if the boot camp was pretty leg heavy, I’ll do something with 2 killer legs exercises that finishes the workout nicely.

I suppose you could say it puts a pain-inducing bow on a soreness-bringing present!

I made a video showing you one of my favorite 4-Minute Tabata workouts for you to try at home.

If you are extremely short on time, you could even go through this workout once of twice as its own workout.  Or you could do it a couple of times in one day – once in the morning, once mid-afternoon and again in the evening.

Use your imagination!

Anyway, here’s the 4-Minute Boot Camp Workout Video…

The Fit Dad

This is part 2 of the 10 Fitness Commandments that appeared in L Magazine – in case you missed part 1 click here.

Last month we went over my first 5 Fitness Commandments and luckily I didn’t offend anyone by comparing myself to Moses.

I have five more Commandments for you, so enough of the hubbub, let’s roll.

6.  Thou shalt not chase shiny things.

The world of fitness is full of “shiny things.”

The latest fad diet isn’t that different than the last best seller and the latest fad workout program won’t be around long.

It’s not sexy, but you need to stick with sound and proven principles that work.

7.  Thou shalt not have a punishment mentality.

Avoid Punishment...

Have you ever eaten too much on the weekend only to wind up kicking yourself and thinking, “I’ll never do that again.”

Or maybe your thoughts fit more along the lines of “I have to do an extra 90 minutes of cardio today to work off that dessert from last night.”

Stop it.

That line of thinking will not accomplish anything except leave you feeling guilty for enjoying life.  It’s okay to splurge as long as it’s in moderation.

However, if you have those thoughts on a regular basis, you need to step back and look at your life and figure out if you’re truly committed to making positive changes.  Chances are high that if you’re having those thoughts week after week, you’re not serious about making a change.

8.  Thou shalt eat real food.

I find it sad that I have to include this, but we have become a “processed society.”  We rely on processed foods, processed drinks and become processed people.

You’d be amazed how much better you feel, how much more energy you have and how quickly weight comes off if you ate REAL food and got rid of the pseudo-foods.

9.  Thou shalt set a good example for thine children.

We try to set a good example for Maren

Show your kids how important eating healthy is by eating healthy.

Show them how important being active is by getting off your butt and moving.

You can’t tell your kids they need to stop playing video games and be active if all they see you doing is sitting on the couch all night watching television.

If you love your kids and don’t want to see them struggle with unnecessary illness or weight issues, set a good example for them while they’re young.  You’ll be amazed at the result.

10.  Thou shalt relax.

As a society we tend to get ourselves wound up just a wee bit too tight.

We stress too easily at the smallest things and that affects your health, lifestyle and weight.

We all need to chill out a bit more, so you now have my permission to take a siesta.

If you’d like a bit more information on chillin’ check out the latest Fit Mom’s Corner

There you have it, there are my “Moses style” 10 commandments.

If you have any other commandments you’d like to add, let me know.  Maybe we can add a third stone tablet to the mix.

The Fit Mom’s Corner – Set A Rhythm

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Hope all you mommies had a wonderful mother’s day!

Chill baby

Ed let me sleep in and when I came downstairs I was greeted with a beautiful picture that Maren painted for me.  Of course I think it is beautiful and so thoughtful of Ed to help Maren with it.

Mother’s Day got me thinking of how busy everyone’s lives are.  We go, go go!

A few months ago I heard a talk on “keeping rhythm”.  Since then I started to pay more attention to the rhythm in our life.  We tend to be on the go, even more so on the weekends.  Monday rolls around and we are tired, but we should be refreshed and ready to take on the week!

We all need to take a Personal Sabbath (a day of rest).  Whatever it is that you believe in, create your own Sabbath.

Embracing silence and solitude gives us perspective and increases awareness.

Wayne Muller wrote in Sabbath: Restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest, “Our perpetual state of busyness represents a war on our natural rhythms that demand quiet and renewal in order to be emotionally, spiritually, and creatively fertile.”

Giving yourself rest will bless those around you.  You will be a better parent, friend and co-worker for it.

Work…Rest…Work…Rest…

Franti has rhythm, how about you?

It is a simple concept, but not easy!  Start by taking 10 minutes of your day.  Set your alarm earlier and get some time to yourself before the rest of the house is awake.  Or, get away over your lunch break and take a walk or sit in your car and quiet your mind.

“Rock with me
Can you hear the sound
A little bit of rhythm makes the world go ‘round”…Michael Franti

Have a great week!

Fit Mom’s Corner – Cinco De Mayo Edition

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Quick note from Ed…Andrea thought it would be cool to contribute to the community by sharing recipes and giving ideas from a woman’s perspective – why she thought I couldn’t do that, I have no idea! – and I thought it would be an awesome idea.

To kick things off, she thought it would fit pretty well sharing a “Skinny” recipe for a margarita – it is Cinco De Mayo afterall!

I’ve never said you can’t drink alcohol while trying to lose weight or get in better shape, you just have to do it properly and in moderation and sticking to drinks like the one Andrea is about to share is the best way to go.

So, without further ado, I’ll throw things over to my lovely wife (and newly dubbed Fit Mom)…

Happy Cinco de Mayo and welcome to The Fit Mom’s Corner!  Today is my inaugural entry and it couldn’t be more fitting than to talk about one of my favorite drinks- the Margarita!!

There are many stories about who invented the tasty beach drink and why.  One that stuck out was about Enrique Bastate Gutierrez.  In the early 1940s living in Tijuana, Mexico he boasted to have created the Margarita as an homage to actress Rita Hayworth, whose real name was Margarita Cansino. As a side note, I also read she also had painful facial plastic surgery so she wouldn’t be stereotyped into Latina acting rolls – crazy stuff!

Recently I decided to start making margaritas from scratch.  There are a few “skinny” recipes that have 100-140 calories verses the 500 in a classic restaurant version- all those calories does not a Fit Mom make!

For the best tasting, least hangover causing tequila, you want one that states 100% pure agave on the label.  A favorite in our house is Milagro.

The simplest recipe with the least calories is 1 shot tequila and diet squirt.  This is yummy, but if a real margarita sans carbonation is what you crave, read on.

My favorite recipe is 1 ½ oz tequila (count 1,2 while you pour, no need to measure), 1 ½ oz of orange liqueur (Triple Sec, Cointreau, Grand Marnier) and splash of sweetened lime juice, or the juice of 2-3 lime wedges for even fewer calories!  I put it all in a shaker with ice, and then pour it over ice, but you could also blend it.

Then sit back, close your eyes and imagine you’re on a sunny beach somewhere in the tropics.

Mmm…they really hit the spot on a hot summer day!  My mouth is watering…

Thanks for stopping by,

Andrea, aka The Fit Mom

P.S. Watch out! These Margaritas go down REALLY easy, so drink responsibly

If I were to ask you to think really hard about what my favorite boot camp exercise is, what do you think it would be?

Some may say push-ups and you’d be close.

Some may say anything inducing pain…and you’d be close!

But when I say “favorite”, I don’t mean the one that makes me smile the most because it makes you work the hardest…

…When I say “favorite”, I’m meaning more along the lines of which exercise (or variation) I like to use most often.

Does that help?

If you guessed the Plank, you’d be right.

I have a number of variations I use in boot camp including Planks, Side Planks, Push-up Planks, Plank Extensions, etc., etc., etc.

I LOVE Planks!

I love them because they flat out work.

They are one of the best stomach exercises and are necessary in building a strong, stable core – which goes far beyond losing stomach fat and getting a nicer figure.

However, there is a big problem with Planks and that is most people do them incorrectly.

Even if you think you’re doing them perfectly, your form will suffer the more fatigued you are…or the less you pay attention to form.

I’m not even immune to letting my form get a bit out of whack!

There are a number of common problems I see every day in boot camp and I made a quick video demonstrating what those problems are and how to fix them.

That’s all I have for today!

Exercise safe and I’ll talk to you soon.

And remember…

Be a superhero today!

The Fit Dad

P.S. – A couple of weeks ago I threw an exercise into a boot camp workout called “The Dive Bomber.”  It’s a heck of a little exercise, but the more people I told about it, the more questions I received on how to do it…so I made a video!
