Archive for Goals

The weather is so, so sweet, the birds are chirping and the flowers are poppin’…

…and my allergies are kicking in, which can mean only one thing!

Summer is just around the corner!

Wooo-hoooo!!

What’s that you say? You’re not ready for summer? You’ve let yourself go into hibernation mode and have accumulated a layer of goo that’s hiding the body you’re wanting to have?

Wow! That sounded very infomerical-like, didn’t it?

Okay, let’s back off the silly-voiced overly excited pitchman and get down to the nitty gritty.

Fall and winter oftentimes bring on a few extra pounds, but not to worry. Even though the weather is getting nicer and you’re getting more anxious about pool and yard-work season, doesn’t mean it’s too late to make progress.

It’s never too late!

Here are a few tips to get you started and rolling. Read More→

Can I ask you a personal question?

Why are you doing what you’re doing?

And by that, I’m of course referring to whatever boot camp fitness/weight loss/lifestyle goals you have and not why you’re watching another episode of “Millionaire Matchmaker” or “Real Housewives of …”.

Okay so maybe that’s not incredibly personal, in the common sense of the term, yet it is quite personal…at least it SHOULD be.

Do You Know Big Mo?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

[fb-like]

Sometimes I’m an annoying hard ass.

I text ladies when they skip boot camp – sometimes early in the morning.

I email ladies when they don’t show up for sessions – repeatedly.

I call if they do it more than once.

To some it may seem annoying, but I don’t care.

Why don’t I care if I’m annoying?

Is This Big Mo?

Why don’t I care if I can be perceived as a hard-ass?

Because I’m trying to instill the “Big Mo” in everyone.

Before you ask, the “Big Mo” is momentum.

More specifically, it could be said that I’m trying to instill a positive habit in everyone – the habit of working out (whether it is with me in boot camp, or on their own).

Getting into the habit of working out is tough.

That’s not totally true because in the beginning it’s not that tough.

You’re full of enthusiasm about a new program and the devilishly handsome and wicked smart boot camp trainer (it’s okay if you gag…I know Andrea will give me crap for saying that).

Sure you’re sore and sure you don’t like it when you’re told to do Burpees and that you need to cut down on some of your favorite foods in order to lose weight and tone up, but it’s okay because you’re excited.

Everybody gets excited about the new stuff.

But pretty soon, it becomes easy to hit the snooze button on the alarm and/or skip your workout.   You tell yourself, “It’s just this one time…I’ll workout on my own later.”

But do you?

The problem is, you’ve slowed the “Big Mo” down and the Big Mo doesn’t like to be slowed down.  The Big Mo gets cranky when he gets slowed down and pretty soon, he completely stops moving.

The Big Mo thrives on you moving forward because the Big Mo knows that if you keep moving forward, you’ll get to your destination…it’s the Law of Big Mo.

That’s the real reason I call, text, email and sometimes can feel like a giant thorn in your tush.

I’m the Big Mo’s assistant and let me tell ya, Big Mo can be fun to work with when you understand his laws…but if you try to fight the Big Mo or think you can alter the Big Mo’s laws, he’ll put you in your place.

Okay, I think I’ve crushed the term “Big Mo” to death and I hope you understand what I’m trying to say.

Big Mo = momentum.

Big Mo = good habits.

You need to continuously workout to make positive changes – whether that’s to lose weight, tone up, or just be more fit and healthy.

Momentum is a really cool thing if you let it work for you.

If you keep putting one foot in front of the other (meaning continue working out while adding good foods and subtract bad foods), you will reach your destination.  Some people have a longer path, but the analogy still holds true.

So let Big Mo work for you rather than trying to work against Big Mo.

Okay, that is the end of my version of Aesop’s fables

Have an awesome day!

Ed

The Fit Mom’s Corner – Set A Rhythm

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Hope all you mommies had a wonderful mother’s day!

Chill baby

Ed let me sleep in and when I came downstairs I was greeted with a beautiful picture that Maren painted for me.  Of course I think it is beautiful and so thoughtful of Ed to help Maren with it.

Mother’s Day got me thinking of how busy everyone’s lives are.  We go, go go!

A few months ago I heard a talk on “keeping rhythm”.  Since then I started to pay more attention to the rhythm in our life.  We tend to be on the go, even more so on the weekends.  Monday rolls around and we are tired, but we should be refreshed and ready to take on the week!

We all need to take a Personal Sabbath (a day of rest).  Whatever it is that you believe in, create your own Sabbath.

Embracing silence and solitude gives us perspective and increases awareness.

Wayne Muller wrote in Sabbath: Restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest, “Our perpetual state of busyness represents a war on our natural rhythms that demand quiet and renewal in order to be emotionally, spiritually, and creatively fertile.”

Giving yourself rest will bless those around you.  You will be a better parent, friend and co-worker for it.

Work…Rest…Work…Rest…

Franti has rhythm, how about you?

It is a simple concept, but not easy!  Start by taking 10 minutes of your day.  Set your alarm earlier and get some time to yourself before the rest of the house is awake.  Or, get away over your lunch break and take a walk or sit in your car and quiet your mind.

“Rock with me
Can you hear the sound
A little bit of rhythm makes the world go ‘round”…Michael Franti

Have a great week!

Do You Bust Your Butt?

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Sometimes you need a shock to the butt to get you rolling.Given that I actually train people on a daily basis, I can control (to a certain degree) how hard they work.

Granted there are situations when I don’t push someone very hard – goals, their mood, how they’re feeling, age, etc. are all factors in how hard I push someone.

But what’s for certain is how hard I push MYSELF in my own workouts – I always bust my butt and keep the intensity cranked up.  If I’m feeling tired or run-down, I’ll still keep the intensity up but I’ll cut the time down.  If I’m feeling good, I’ll crank the intensity up even more and lengthen the workout a bit (but never longer than 25 minutes).

Far too few people actually follow through with the “kick your butt” mentality when it comes to workouts and that’s a shame because it’s vital if you want to see results plus the higher the intensity the better you feel when you’re done.  There’s just something magical about a killer workout that sends your endorphins through the roof.

I made a quick video about the importance of busting your own ass in your workouts.

Like to see it, here it go…

So what do you think?  Am I off base or does what I’m saying make sense?

Have an awesome day!

later,

fitdadTVThe New Year is fast approaching and you know what that means…

…New Year’s Resolutions, and you know what that means…

…everybody telling themsevles they’re going to “lose weight” this year and that’s an awesome thing.  If you need to lose weight, then NOW is the time to get up off your butt and do something.

The troubling thing is that most ladies won’t stick with their resolutions past a few months, if they even make it that long and I know it’s because their goals and resolutions have a huge problem.

Check this video out to see what I’m talking about and to see what your goals and resolutions should really look and sound like.

So what do you think?

Does that make sense?

I can tell you this – if you set goals the way I tell you, it makes it much easier to actually achieve them.

Leave a comment below and let me know what your resolutions are for this year.

I hope you have an awesome and safe New Year!

And remember…

…Be A Superhero Today!

Talk to you soon,

The Fit Dad

P.S. – One of my resolutions for 2010 is to give you more content on this blog so look out for a lot more videos, articles, nutrition tips, free workouts and special announcements.  2010 is going to rock and I want you to come along for the ride!

This Month’s L Magazine Article

Monday, August 31st, 2009

In case you haven’t read my latest article in L Magazine, here it is.

Also, in case you didn’t know L is now available online at www.LMagazineLincoln.com.  It’s a pretty cool option they’ve given readers since they changed up their distribution process in the past year.

Anyway, here’s the article…

This month's L Article

This month's L Article

When it comes to fitness and weight loss, it’s been pounded into your head to have a goal.

Gotta have the goal, right?

It’s true, by the way.  You have to have at least one goal, and preferably many, if you want to succeed, but I want to ask you something.

How much closer to your goals are you today than you were 3 months ago?

Be honest.

Are you close?  Can you see the finish line?  Are you so stinkin’ happy you’re about to achieve something you’ve worked so hard at over the past few months?

Or have you let another 3 months slip by and are now kicking yourself because of it?

You were so excited then, weren’t you?  You had a clear-cut goal in mind and you were bound and determined you were going to get there.

But something happened…something always happens.

You got tied up with other “stuff.”

You let kids’ activities push your workout and nutrition plans to the backburner, then they went completely off the radar.

You went to a few too many golf events, had a few too many drinks and a few too many burgers, potato salads, ice creams, etc.

You let summer do what summer does best.

But you know what?

That’s okay.

All that stuff is in the past and today is a new day.

You can’t change what you did yesterday, but you have complete control of what you do TODAY and that’s all that matters.

Guys, if you want to get rid of that big ole’ gut, you can start right now.

Ladies, if you want to get rid of your “bye-bye” arms, you can start right now.

Do you want to be able to walk up a flight of stairs without panting like a dog on a hot summer day?

Don’t say you’ll start tomorrow, because tomorrow never comes.

Take charge right now.  Decide you want to change, and then do something about it.

That’s the key…

You can’t decide to change, get warm and fuzzy inside, then let the day get away from you.  You have to act.

Figure out what you want to do and how you’re going to do it…then DO IT!

Better yet, find someone to do it with.  Your spouse, a friend, sibling or co-worker.  It doesn’t matter who, just pick somebody who has similar goals.

Someone you can rely on when times get tough and kick you in the butt when needed.  Someone you can trust won’t back out on you and someone who won’t let you do the same.

So, what are you gonna do?  Let another couple months go by without doing anything?  Let this fall go by only to hop in the same carousel come January?

Or are you going to decide this time’s different, set some meaningful goals and go after them like N’damukong Suh goes after quarterbacks’ heads?

The choice is yours and only yours, but I have faith you’ll make the right one.
