Bad vs. Good

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

I think it’s time for a bit of a mental shift when it comes to nutrition/diet.

All too often we tend to focus on the Bad Guys.

Millions of books have been sold making certain foods/food groups out to be Bad Guys.

Lord knows how many articles have been written (some by me) making certain foods out to be the devil.

I think that’s a bad way to go about living a healthy lifestyle (which is really what you’re after whether you’re trying to lose weight, tone up, gain muscle, etc.) and leads to nothing but “bad” thoughts.

Think about it…

The diet industry (of which I’m a part) has made Bad Guys out of:

Carbohydrates

Fat

Fruit

Snacks

Desserts

“Commercial” Foods

Bread

Potatoes

Dairy

Gluten

Wheat

Soy

Cattle (and every other animal we eat)

I could go on, but I think you get my point.

We like to create bad guys.

I don’t think that does you any good at all.

Instead, rather than focusing on the Bad Guys and how they can do you all sorts of harm, let’s instead focus on the Good Guys.

I have this belief that if you do nothing but focus on the Good Guys, or Good Habits, that you will achieve your goals – you HAVE to!

If all you focus on is ADDING the GOOD, the bad won’t have a place in your life.

If all you focus on is eating the Good stuff, the bad stuff will still be there, but in much less quantity, which gives it much less power.

So I want to challenge you to focus on the addition of the good, not the subtraction of the bad.

Remember; add the good and the bad will have no choice but to go away.

If you know a bad habit of yours is skipping breakfast, then eating something bad later because you’re starving; the old way would be to try and remove the bad thing – whether it’s a bagel, or something similar – rather than trying to ADD the GOOD.

So, rather than trying to remove that bad, focus instead on figuring out a way where you don’t skip breakfast and instead eat something very healthy like a homemade smoothie (my favorite!), oatmeal with blueberries and sliced strawberries, granola with almond milk, etc.

That way when that time of morning rolls around where you normally crave something bad hits, you won’t have those cravings anymore.

The bad is removed because you focused on the addition of good.

Make sense?

Okay, so how can you apply this to your own life?

Remember, don’t try to change huge parts of your lifestyle all at once and instead focus on 1 or 2 until they become habit, then move on to the next one.  If you overwhelm yourself with loads of stuff to do, nothing will get done.

Talk soon!

P.S. – A couple weeks ago I finished writing and filming June’s LSV Inner Circle.  It’s an awesome little ditty – we talked about Cortisol and how you “Greet Your Day” and the workouts were all arms, all the time!  Next month I’m writing a huge article about fruit.  I want to put this whole “does fruit make you fat” thing to bed.  If you want to get in on the fun, click here to learn all about the Inner Circle and join the LSV Inner Circle today!

The weather is so, so sweet, the birds are chirping and the flowers are poppin’…

…and my allergies are kicking in, which can mean only one thing!

Summer is just around the corner!

Wooo-hoooo!!

What’s that you say? You’re not ready for summer? You’ve let yourself go into hibernation mode and have accumulated a layer of goo that’s hiding the body you’re wanting to have?

Wow! That sounded very infomerical-like, didn’t it?

Okay, let’s back off the silly-voiced overly excited pitchman and get down to the nitty gritty.

Fall and winter oftentimes bring on a few extra pounds, but not to worry. Even though the weather is getting nicer and you’re getting more anxious about pool and yard-work season, doesn’t mean it’s too late to make progress.

It’s never too late!

Here are a few tips to get you started and rolling. Read More→

3 Tips To Lose Tummy Fat and Tone Up!

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Abs, abs, abs, everyone wants the abs.

I can’t blame ‘em.  I want better abs too.  I want a nicer stomach too, but do you know some of the best ways to work your abs?

I compiled a quick list for you on how to better work your tummy and get a sleeker figure (and healthier back and better posture too!).

1.  Turn every exercise into an abs exercise

How do you do such a thing?

The easiest way to do so is to make sure your abs are “braced” during every exercise.lincoln, nebraska boot camp els boot camps

What’s that feel like?

You’ve done a Plank in boot camp, right?

What does your stomach feel like during the Plank?  You should be bracing it and it should feel “flexed.”

That’s what your abs should feel like whether you’re doing a Plank, Side Plank, Push-up, Lunge, Burpee, Rear Fly, etc.

Your abs should always be braced.

This is tough at first, but once you focus on it for a couple weeks it becomes second nature.

During workouts I can tell if someone is not bracing their abs because rather than keeping them “In and Tight” they are pushing their stomach out. Read More→

Lincoln Boot Camp Metabolic Blast Workout

[fb-share]  [fb-like]

Hey!

Ya know…sometimes you just need to sweat.

It has other benefits than meaning that you’re burning loads of calories – it detoxifies and cleanses the skin and pores, which is always a good thing.

It gives you a healthy glow, which is another good thing.

Plus after you’re done you feel alive!  You feel vibrant!  You feel like you can take on the world…

…Or you just feel like flopping onto the floor never to rise again (which does happen from time-to-time in boot camp!) :)

Anyway, in my effort to give you all these wonderful benefits, I give you the following Boot Camp Metabolic Blast Workout.

It’s a doozy and not only will it make you sweat, but it’ll burn calories, work your legs and butt like crazy as well as the abs/core.

To give it a watch (and then a try), check it out below:

Do You Know Big Mo?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

[fb-like]

Sometimes I’m an annoying hard ass.

I text ladies when they skip boot camp – sometimes early in the morning.

I email ladies when they don’t show up for sessions – repeatedly.

I call if they do it more than once.

To some it may seem annoying, but I don’t care.

Why don’t I care if I’m annoying?

Is This Big Mo?

Why don’t I care if I can be perceived as a hard-ass?

Because I’m trying to instill the “Big Mo” in everyone.

Before you ask, the “Big Mo” is momentum.

More specifically, it could be said that I’m trying to instill a positive habit in everyone – the habit of working out (whether it is with me in boot camp, or on their own).

Getting into the habit of working out is tough.

That’s not totally true because in the beginning it’s not that tough.

You’re full of enthusiasm about a new program and the devilishly handsome and wicked smart boot camp trainer (it’s okay if you gag…I know Andrea will give me crap for saying that).

Sure you’re sore and sure you don’t like it when you’re told to do Burpees and that you need to cut down on some of your favorite foods in order to lose weight and tone up, but it’s okay because you’re excited.

Everybody gets excited about the new stuff.

But pretty soon, it becomes easy to hit the snooze button on the alarm and/or skip your workout.   You tell yourself, “It’s just this one time…I’ll workout on my own later.”

But do you?

The problem is, you’ve slowed the “Big Mo” down and the Big Mo doesn’t like to be slowed down.  The Big Mo gets cranky when he gets slowed down and pretty soon, he completely stops moving.

The Big Mo thrives on you moving forward because the Big Mo knows that if you keep moving forward, you’ll get to your destination…it’s the Law of Big Mo.

That’s the real reason I call, text, email and sometimes can feel like a giant thorn in your tush.

I’m the Big Mo’s assistant and let me tell ya, Big Mo can be fun to work with when you understand his laws…but if you try to fight the Big Mo or think you can alter the Big Mo’s laws, he’ll put you in your place.

Okay, I think I’ve crushed the term “Big Mo” to death and I hope you understand what I’m trying to say.

Big Mo = momentum.

Big Mo = good habits.

You need to continuously workout to make positive changes – whether that’s to lose weight, tone up, or just be more fit and healthy.

Momentum is a really cool thing if you let it work for you.

If you keep putting one foot in front of the other (meaning continue working out while adding good foods and subtract bad foods), you will reach your destination.  Some people have a longer path, but the analogy still holds true.

So let Big Mo work for you rather than trying to work against Big Mo.

Okay, that is the end of my version of Aesop’s fables

Have an awesome day!

Ed

P.S. – Did that make sense?  Leave a comment below if you have any questions or would like to share any of your own stories…or if you’d just like to give me crap.

Just a quickie for you today.

Having just said that, I realize that it’s very difficult for me to write a “quick” article.  I say they’ll be quick, but they end up being…not too quick.  Hopefully I stick with the “quick” mindset.

I guess I better get on with it, huh?

I want to ask you a question.

Are you ready for it?

I know that was a question, but it wasn’t the question I wanted to ask.

What did you eat this weekend?

I don’t just mean for dinner – I mean EVERYTHING.  What did you eat?

Not only that, but what did you drink?

Okay, that’s 2 questions, but they’re essentially the same.

If you need to sit and think for a bit, that’s fine.  I want you to think about everything you ate or drank over the weekend.

What feelings does that food bring up?

Did the food make you feel good?  Did it make you feel good AFTER eating it or did it make you feel bloated, “heavy” and with thoughts of “Why did I eat that?”

If the answer is more the latter, than the former…why?

If what you ate and drank over the weekend made you feel like crap and will eventually lead you to either gaining weight or maintaining your current weight, why did you do it?

If it made you feel like crap, did you tell yourself you wouldn’t do it again?

Did you feel bad after eating/drinking what you did?

If you did, that’s the wrong feeling you should be having.

Food is meant to not only provide you with fuel, but it should be something you enjoy and if you feel bad about what you ate, how much you ate and how often you ate, then you’re thinking about things incorrectly.

Yes, I said “thinking” and not “doing.”

Awesome Boot Camp Slider Workout

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

[fb-like]

If you haven’t been to boot camp in a while, you have been missing out on one of my favorite toys – The Slider!

These puppies are so versatile and turn any lower body exercise into a killer abs exercise and they turn any abs exercise into an even more intense version…and the best part is everybody groans whenever I get them out!

That’s how I know when something really works…when everyone simultaneously groans and cusses under their breath (or out loud!).

I made a quick video for you showing you an awesome mini-circuit taken straight from a recent boot camp workout using The Sliders.

It’s short and sweet, but don’t let the small amount of time it takes to do the workout fool you because it’s an awesome little circuit that hits virtually every muscle in your body and cranks your metabolism up which means you burn more calories and get rid of even more tummy fat!

All good things, right?!

Check out the video below… Read More→

What’s happenin’!

Just a quickie for you today because I’ve got a killer little boot camp workout video to share with you.

There are days I like to throw in a little 4-Minute “Tabata” style workout into boot camp.  Where I put it depends on the Theme of the day’s workout.

If it’s a highly “Metabolic” workout, I’ll throw it in the beginning because these puppies do a pretty good job at shooting your heart rate and metabolism through the roof and keep it there the remainder of the workout.

Other days I’ll throw it at the end of the workout as a “Finisher.”  For instance if the boot camp was pretty leg heavy, I’ll do something with 2 killer legs exercises that finishes the workout nicely.

I suppose you could say it puts a pain-inducing bow on a soreness-bringing present!

I made a video showing you one of my favorite 4-Minute Tabata workouts for you to try at home.

If you are extremely short on time, you could even go through this workout once of twice as its own workout.  Or you could do it a couple of times in one day – once in the morning, once mid-afternoon and again in the evening.

Use your imagination!

Anyway, here’s the 4-Minute Boot Camp Workout Video…

Let me know what you think by leaving a comment below!

Have an awesome day!

The Fit Dad

Hey everybody!

I hope your day is going awesome!  The boot camp workout I made today was a killer and I’ve had a couple emails and a Facebook response or 2 asking if I could send them the workout we did.

So I thought that it would be totally awesome to put it up on the blog rather than sending individual emails that way EVERYONE could partake in the torture…I mean fun!

Here’s the rundown…

Warm-up:
1A) Hatchet – 15 reps
1B) Squat w/Push – 15 reps
2)  Bird Dog – 15 reps per side

Phase 1 of the Boot Camp Workout:  Sexy Arms!!

1A) 1 ½ Shoulder Press – 15 reps
1B) Upright Row – 15 reps

2A) 1-Arm DB Swing – 20 reps per arm
2B) DB Rear Fly – 15 reps

3A) Push-up – 12 reps
3B) Overhead Bodyweight Squat – 15 reps

4A) Seated Overhead Extension – 15 reps
4B) Plank Extension

Take a quick water break, and then go into…

Phase 2 of the Boot Camp WorkoutMetabolic Blast!!

1A) Cross Body Mountain Climber – 12 reps per side
1B) Toe Touch Crunch – 20 reps
1C) Squat Thrust – 12 reps

2A) Jumping Jack – 30 reps
2B) Dive Bomber – 10 reps
2C) Stationary Lunge w/Shoulder Press – 15 reps per side

Phase 3 (If you have time) of the Boot Camp Workout:  4-Minute Tabata-Style!!

1A) DB Swing – 20 seconds
Rest 10 seconds
1B) Squat w/Shoulder Press – 20 seconds
Rest 10 seconds and repeat for 4 minutes – for the math-challenge, that should be 4 rounds…

Hope you enjoy it!

All the ladies were panting and their arms were very jell-o-like, which is exactly what I was going for.

When you really take a look at the workout, there’s nothing overly strenuous by itself, it’s the way the workout is put together – the way the exercises are combined and the reps used that really kick the intensity up a bit.

Just make sure you adhere to my 1 rule…Always work hard! It doesn’t matter what your current fitness level is because everyone can work hard.  Just make sure you keep moving forward and constantly challenge yourself.

Have an awesome day!

P.S. – If you’ve never come to one of my boot camps (which are da bomb-diggity), shoot me an email, call me at 304-7848, or click here to learn more.

“Ed, I need a meal plan.  I don’t know what the heck I’m supposed to eat…help me out!”

“Can you please give me a meal plan and some recipes to help me lose fat?”

“Yo Ed!  My eating is out of whack…can you help me out by giving me a meal plan?”

That’s just a small sample of the emails I receive on a weekly basis asking for meal plans and recipes and that’s not including the questions I receive from my training clients and boot campers.

Because of all those questions I thought I should hook you up with a few awesome recipes that are healthy, easy to make and will help you lose fat.

Truth be told, I’m not much of a chef.

Actually, I hate cooking.

I’m lucky that I have a beautiful and drop-dead sexy wife who enjoys cooking (score some brownie points for me!).

I’m also lucky that I’ve got some awesome friends at Prograde Nutrition who have done even more of the heavy lifting for me in creating a bunch of “done-for-you” recipes.

To be more precise, they’ve come up with 197 healthy, fat fighting recipes.

I don’t promote other products very often, but when I find something that fits my ideals, I promote it with all my heart and anything Prograde does gets my stamp of approval.

The best part about the “197 Healthy and Delicious Fat Burning Recipes” eBook is that it only costs $4.95!

I can’t tell you how much I’ve (more precisely my wife) has spent on cookbooks.  We have cupboards FULL of cookbooks and none of them come close to being entirely full of healthy recipes and I know for certain none of them were this inexpensive.

If you value healthy eating and need ideas on what to cook, you need to grab this eBook.
